HS 319 - Nazi Germany and the Holocaust

(3.00 cr.)

Prerequisite: One HS 100-level course. Students discuss not only what happened during the Holocaust, but how people talk about, write about, debate, and, finally, cope with it. Historical frameworks include Nationalism and anti-Semitism in Europe, World War I's impact on German economics and politics, and Hitler's rise to power. The structure and mechanics of the Third Reich as a racial state and the dynamics of the persecution of European Jews and other marginalized groups are examined. The personal experience of the Holocaust from the perspective of perpetrator, victim, and bystander are explored. Students also analyze current debates about the Holocaust, study popular culture and the Holocaust, and visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. GT
