Surveys the development and structure of the U.S. economy and its business enterprise from the country's formation through the advent of the industrial revolution and the railroad, focusing on such questions as: What was the framework of the economy of the American colonies and what impact did independence have on it? What were the major forces for change in the U.S. economy, 1600-1850? What patterns, if any, did that change assume?
