HS 377 - History of Modern China

Prerequisite: One HS 100-level course. Discusses important social, political, economic, and cultural events during the modern period of Chinese history, from the reign of the first Ch'ing emperor to that of the current Chinese Communist leader, Deng Xiaoping. Integrates lectures, discussion, movies, a short library project, and other assignments to foster an interest in Chinese history and culture. Several short papers; midterm and final examinations.
