HS 427 - The Era of Good Stealings? Gilded Age America, 1865-1900(3.00 cr.)
Prerequisite: One HS 100-level course, one HS 300-level course. Examines the transformation of the United States into an urban, industrial society during the rowdy, rambunctious, and sometimes raw period between the end of the Civil War and the turn of the century. Focuses on the complex interplay between the country's rural, agrarian heritage and the impact of such new forces on the experiment with an active federal government in Reconstruction, the implementation of an industrial revolution, the rise of an industrial proletariat, waves of large-scale immigration, the development of the big city, western expansion and the closing of the frontier, and growing farmer discontent.
