What roles have America's political institutions as well as its political ideas and rhetoric played in society and the economy? What are the dominant patterns, causes, and consequences of political change in American history? Answers to these and other questions concerning the development of the American state are sought through focus on key moments of state-building and institutional development from its founding to the present.
