ED 311  -  Schooling in Baltimore

(3.00 cr.)

Students learn the history, context, innovations, and power structures impacting students in and around Baltimore. The course is divided up into two halves with the first half delving into Baltimore's history, allowing students to make connections to the current environment. The policies put in place by the city that have had negative generational impacts on Black families, the schools, and schooling are studied. The second half covers the assets and positive strategies in/around Baltimore working on behalf of student success. Students walk away with a nuanced understanding of the context and culture of schools in the city and county making up the rich tapestry of the greater Baltimore community. There are many implications throughout the course related to the discernment of justice in action in Baltimore City.
