Requirements for Major
Requirements for a major and an example of a typical program of courses are as follows:
Notes:
- To satisfy the history core and certification requirements, all students (except Honors) must complete at least one United States history course at the 100-level or 300-level.
Honors students take the Human Drama sequence (HN 201-HN 204) and one upper-level United States history course numbered HS 410 or above. Honors students with AP credit for HS 103 may fulfill their Honors core curriculum requirement in History with any course numbered HS 410 or above.
- Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement under Curriculum and Policies).
- During the spring of the senior year, elementary education majors who are not eligible for the certification track register for the 12-credit, Non-certification Option, consisting of one departmental elective and three free electives (chosen in conjunction with the advisor). The ED 446 requirement is waived for these students and replaced with one free elective. All other requirements for the major must be met. Students who complete this option do not complete the Maryland-approved program and cannot be recommended for certification.
