English Minor

The English minor requires only five 300- or 400-level courses beyond the core, so it is easy to combine with almost any major.  One course must be pre-1800 (EN 300-339; 407; 411-439).

Studying literature cultivates reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. It also broadens the moral imagination, increases emotional intelligence, and enhances students' ability to question the status quo and solve problems creatively.

Employers and postgraduate programs tell us that those who engage in the ongoing, sustained study of literature have a competitive edge in fields ranging from law, publishing, and teaching to finance, marketing, medicine, psychology, and information technology.

Requirements for the Minor

  • Understanding Literature (EN 101 )
  • One pre-1800 course (EN 300-339; 407; 411-439)
  • Four upper-division English courses; including one seminar
