Sociology Electives


Students must complete three Sociology electives at the SC 360-499 level (one of which must be a 400-level seminar).

Notes:


  1. Twelve courses are required: SC 100 SC 201 , SC 202  or SC 203 , SC 342 , SC 355 , SC 401 , three courses at the SC 360-499 level (one of which must be a 400-level seminar), and three SC electives at any level.
  2. Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis (ST 110 ) or an equivalent statistics course (e.g., EC 220 ) is required for the major. Making Sense of Data with Database Management Systems (CS 105 ) and/or Topics in Introductory Computer Science (CS 120 ) are strongly recommended. ST 110  and CS 105  can be used to fulfill the mathematics/natural science core requirements.
  3. Interdisciplinary Major: Students wishing to combine sociology with some other field for an interdisciplinary major must take SC 201 , SC 202 , SC 342 , SC 355 , and four sociology electives, two of which must be SC 360-499 level (and one of those must be a 400-level seminar).
  4. The combination of biology/sociology is an excellent program of study for students interested in medical school, graduate study in medical sociology, or a career in the health field. Combining sociology with psychology, writing, and history are also common interdisciplinary courses of study.  Global studies is a common double major with sociology.  
  5. SC 100 SC 201 SC 202 SC 203 SC 204 SC 205 SC 206 SC 207 , and SC 209  all count toward the Social Science Core requirement.
  6. Prerequisites may be waived for any course upon receiving written permission of the instructor and the department chair.
  7. Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement  under Curriculum and Policies).
