Secondary Education Minor

Undergraduate students interested in pursuing the minor must schedule an appointment to meet with the secondary education minor advisor before declaring the minor. Specific elective courses may be required to meet certification requirements in certain content areas.

Candidates completing the certification track will be certified to teach grades 7-12 in biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, physics, or social studies or in grades PK-12 in art, French, Spanish, or music (instrumental or vocal).

Requirements for the Minor

The Minor in Secondary Education requires the coursework below, regardless of major:

Freshman/Sophomore Year:

Junior Year

Fall Term

RE 474 - Literacy in the Content Area I (Can be taken fall of senior year)

Spring Term

ED 429 - Secondary Methods of Teaching
ED 434 - Field Experience in Education (Secondary)
RE 475 - Literacy in the Content Area II (Can be taken spring of senior year)

Senior Year

Fall Term

Content Area Teaching Methods (ED 422 or ED 423 or ED 424 or ED 425 or ED 426 or ED 427 or ED 428 )*
ED 432 - Internship I and Seminar (Secondary/Middle) *

Spring Term

Internship II with Seminar: Student Teaching (Secondary) (ED 433 or ED 435 or ED 452 or ED 453 or ED 454 or ED 455 or ED 456 )*
