Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness, BBA

General Information

The Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness (L&OE) major provides a thorough understanding of how leaders manage people and processes that contribute to organizational effectiveness and performance.  Students will learn how to work effectively as employees, teammates, and ultimately leaders across organizational functions to create a great place to work.  Studies show that great workplaces grow revenues faster, have more engaged employees, and are more innovative.

All L&OE majors will develop important competencies to be effective leaders and managers by taking courses in organizational behavior, leadership, human resources management, teams, innovation, and strategic management.  To culminate their experience, students will take a consulting practicum using case competitions to them integrate and apply the competencies to solve problems faced by organizations. A such, the L&OE major addresses a common complaint of employers who note that many students are unable to demonstrate important competencies once they enter the workforce.

Learning Aims

Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness majors will learn to become leaders by understanding how to influence others, improve efficiency and process reliability. Students will be able to:

  • Exhibit knowledge of how to set goals, plan, and motivate others toward objectives,
  • Demonstrate appropriate responses for improving human and social capital issues within organizations,
  • Utilize appropriate strategies for challenging the status quo to overcome ineffective processes, and
  • Demonstrate an awareness of their own values, strengths, and passions through self-reflection.

Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness majors will learn how to work cooperatively and collaboratively to help their team achieve a common goal. Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the processes that support effective teamwork,
  • Exhibit knowledge of how to set objectives and manage conflicts within the team,
  • Employ team processes to effective help the team complete its objectives, and
  • Demonstrate an awareness of how to adapt to the needs of teammates, build trust, and encourage mutual commitment to the team.

Requirements for the leadership and organizational effectiveness major and typical program of courses are listed below. Students majoring in leadership and organizational effectiveness must take the business foundation  in addition to the requirements listed below.

* MG 402  and MG 407  can be taken in either the fall or spring term if prerequisites and corequisites are met.

** Candidates for the BBA degree may substitute Introduction to Statistics (ST 210 ) for EC 220 .  Note that both EC 220  and ST 210  count towards the third Math/Natural Science requirement in the Loyola Core.
