The Montessori M.Ed. program brings together graduate students from across the globe to analyze, synthesize, and actualize their pathway towards continuously shifting and strengthening the methodology of Montessori education. Through this unique program, students engage in a 33-credit degree sequence. The Concurrent M.Ed.is offered in a convenient hybrid format.

The M.Ed. in Montessori Education aims to develop strong outcomes for children, families, and communities in Montessori education. The graduate program emphasizes a commitment to inclusive teaching practices in Montessori environments, with a focus on critical analysis of educational literature and continuous innovation. Students learn to cultivate collaborative learning environments, reflect on their professional growth, and utilize data-driven insights for effective teaching. Additionally, they are prepared for leadership roles through active engagement in professional collaborations within the Montessori community.

Candidates for the concurrent pathway must be dually enrolled with an eligible Off-Site Partner Training Institute at the start of the graduate program coursework in order to be eligible for this degree program. In addition to passing all pedagogical coursework, students must successfully complete all AMI diploma requirements (including comprehensive examinations) to be eligible for graduation.

Degree Requirements

Concurrent M.Ed. students choose a concentration in one of the following training areas:

Birth to Three
Early Childhood Education
Elementary Education

Thirty-three (33) credits of required coursework must be completed. All students complete the five pedagogy courses specific to their area of concentration followed by the five online core courses. The pedagogy coursework will take place off-site at the training institute.

Montessori Core (18 credits)

Practicum

All students must successfully complete a semester-long practicum in a professional setting local to the student and agreed upon by the academic advisor. Access to a professional setting is required for the practicum component and must be arranged prior to enrolling in MO 667 .

Concentrations

Students select an area of interest at the start of their degree sequence. As part of the concurrent program, students engage in a high-quality pedagogy sequence aligned with Montessori teacher training at one of Loyola University Maryland's off-site training locations. The course sequence for each level of training is as follows:

Birth to Three Pedagogy (15 credits)

Early Childhood Education Pedagogy (15 credits)

Elementary Education Pedagogy (15 credits)

Notes:

Students entering the Concurrent AMI program are responsible for making any necessary arrangements with the AMI training institute required to successfully complete all components of training, including Observation and Practice Teaching.
All core courses are offered fully online.
A master's degree in Montessori education does not lead directly to teacher certification in Maryland. In the state of Maryland, the concurrent program pathway may prepare students for a Montessori Professional Certificate (MPC). To find out more about the MPC, please visit the Maryland State Department of Education website. Out-of-state students should submit official transcripts and course descriptions directly to their respective State Department of Education to determine if courses satisfy specific certification requirements.
