DS 851 - Business Intelligence and Data Mining(3.00 cr.)
Prerequisite: DS 730 . Introduces students to the concepts of managerial decision making through business intelligence (BI) and data mining, as well as data mining software such as SAS Enterprise Miner and SAS Visual Analytics. Students develop an understanding of the strengths and limitations of data mining techniques, and they actively engage in data mining projects applying these techniques. Broad overviews are provided to both descriptive and predictive modeling techniques including clustering, linear and logistic regression, decision trees, and neural networks. The concepts of data input, data partitioning, variable selection, transformation, imputation, and model assessment (specifically lift charts and ROC curves) are presented. Students participate in the entire data mining process from data acquisition to final model deployment. Implications related to organizational decision making and data science teams are discussed. A real-world data mining project serves as the culmination of this sequence. Same course as GB 851 . (Summer only)
