ED 101 - Introduction to Urban Education

(3.00 cr.)

Corequisite: ED 431 . Seeks to provide an overview of the complex issues that impact the development and maintenance of urban schools in the United States. More specifically, the course introduces students to a variety of frameworks through which they learn to examine the nature of urban schools, their historical development, their link to the social and political contexts, and perspectives of the people whose narratives define not only urban schools but also urban communities. Students analyze the formation, development, and current conditions of urban education from a number of different perspectives. This course also seeks to equip students with the ability to apply historical, theoretical, policy, and pedagogical analyses to contemporary issues in urban schools. Students are expected to use one or more analytical frames to analyze conditions in an urban school district in the United States. A field experience in a school setting is required. Closed to students who have taken ED 100 .
