SC 222 - Sociology of Asian Americans(3.00 cr.)
Challenging the myth of a monolithic Asian American experience, sociological and interdisciplinary frameworks are used to ask what Asian America means and how such meanings have changed through history. Through a range of case studies, students situate Asian America within the global and local contexts of war, colonialism, environmental racism, migration, labor, and social movements. The course explores how social inequality, culture, and politics shape the lives of Asian Americans utilizing examples such as COVID-19 and anti-Asian racism, affirmative action, and pop culture. While focusing on Asian America, discussions also unpack tensions between Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities, considering the implications of these dynamics for activism, policy, and scholarship. Fulfills social science core.
