Financial Risk Management and Insurance, BS

The Financial Risk Management and Insurance program prepares students for careers focused on identifying, analyzing, and managing the financial risks faced by businesses, financial institutions, and other organizations. In an increasingly complex and uncertain global economy, professionals who understand how to evaluate and manage risk play a critical role in helping organizations make informed financial decisions and maintain long-term stability.

The program combines a strong foundation in finance with specialized coursework in financial risk management, insurance, derivatives, and enterprise risk management. Students learn how to analyze financial markets, assess potential risks, and develop strategies to manage or transfer risk through financial instruments and insurance mechanisms.

Demand for professionals with expertise in risk management and insurance continues to grow as organizations face evolving financial, technological, and operational risks. Through a combination of rigorous coursework and engagement with industry professionals, students gain practical insights into how risk management and insurance operate in real-world financial markets and organizations.

Graduates are well prepared for careers such as financial risk analyst, insurance underwriter, enterprise risk manager, risk consultant, catastrophe risk analyst, and investment risk specialist. These roles are found in insurance and reinsurance companies, financial institutions, consulting firms, corporations, and government agencies.

Competency Goals

The Financial Risk Management and Insurance major provides a rigorous education that prepares graduates to identify, analyze, and manage financial and insurable risks in modern organizations. The program prepares students to be contributing members of the risk management, insurance, and financial services professions and to be life-long learners. To meet these objectives, students graduating from the program should possess the following knowledge and skills.

  • Competency Goal 1 – Analytical Problem Solving - Students will be able to analyze financial and risk management problems, evaluate relevant market and organizational information, and recommend solutions using appropriate analytical tools, technologies, and risk management frameworks.
  • Competency Goal 2 – Financial Risk Management and Insurance Concepts - Students will be able to apply financial risk management and insurance concepts, including risk identification and measurement, derivatives and financial risk management tools, insurance mechanisms, and enterprise risk management strategies.
  • Competency Goal 3 – Professional Communication in Risk Management - Students will be able to communicate financial risk and insurance information clearly and effectively using appropriate professional terminology in written and oral formats.

Major Requirements


Requirements for the Financial Risk Management and Insurance major and an example of a typical program of courses are listed below. Students majoring in Financial Risk Management and Insurance must complete the business foundation courses in addition to the major requirements listed below.   1. Candidates for the degree may substitute ST 210  for EC 220 . Note that both EC 220  and ST 210  count towards the third Math/Natural Science requirement in the Loyola Core.
