HS 446 - Modern Latin American Cities

(3.00 cr.)

Prerequisite: One HS 100-level course, one HS 300-level course. Since the late 1800s, Latin America has rapidly urbanized and now has three of the world's ten largest cities. Indeed, Latin America's urban problems have largely prefigured current American urban dilemmas. In addition to the general problems of urban history, this course given special attention to the important role foreign migration has and continues to play. Students study the historical experiences of foreign migrants to Latin America and Latin American migrants to the United States: how have those experiences differed; are there still social melting pots; and will Latin American and United States cities in the twenty-first century be more similar than different?
