TH 354 - Male and Female in the Kingdom of God: Contemporary Gender Perspectives on the Bible

(3.00 cr.)

Prerequisite: TH 201 . Examines the presentation of gender in the Bible, as well as contemporary readings of biblical texts informed by modern gender studies perspectives. While taking seriously the Church's claim to the Bible as scripture, students explore how the cultural milieu in which its texts were written has shaped them. Explores competing claims that the Bible is largely male-centered and used to support oppressive structures, or that it offers a life-giving message of liberation in spite of its cultural and historical background, in light of the complexities of communal practices and hermeneutical approaches.
