TH 275 - Martyrs and Martyrdom: Theology and Ideology(3.00 cr.)
Examines martyrdom and martyrs in the Christian tradition and its meanings, and then explores ideas of martyrdom prevalent among Christian, Muslim, and Jewish fundamentalist groups today. How have the notions of martyrdom been used to legitimate violence against the self and others? Topics discussed include imperialism, colonialism, apocalyptic groups, suicide bombings, and school shootings. How does the Catholic Church distinguish between who can be canonized as a Martyr and who cannot? Students seek to understand the gap between present ideologies of martyrdom and more traditional theological discourse on martyrdom.
