TH 277 - Religion and Healthcare in Baltimore's History(3.00 cr.)
Catholic, Jewish, and other religious communities have contributed to the creation of Baltimore's hospitals and community health initiatives since the nineteenth century. Students explore the unique ways in which faith communities promoted the emergence of modern medicine and healthcare in Baltimore, a world-renowned medical city with a vibrant presence of diverse faiths. Students learn about the impact of historic immigration on the creation of Baltimore's Catholic, Jewish, and other medical institutions. Through readings related to the economic and social aspects of health, the students gain an understanding of the powerful impact that belief systems have had on the American way of understanding medicine's place in the life of the nation's cities. Students also reflect on why health continues to play a prominent role in the religious lives of the city's residents, especially African Americans. Closed to students who have taken TH 274 .
