HS 216 - A Queer History of Europe and North America

(3.00 cr.)

Introduces students to the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in Europe and North America. The course showcases the diversity of sexual and gender identities of past societies, while examining how people who diverged from the sexual norm shaped the social, cultural, and political histories of their communities. Taking an intersectional approach, the course engages with the ways sexuality shaped and was shaped by race, gender, and class. While tracing the emergence of LGBTQ communities and identities on both sides of the Atlantic, the course also includes related topics, such as: male and female prostitution, the sexual sciences and the politics of sexual medicine, queer politics, sex and empire, sexual violence, slavery, and genocide, and media depictions of LGBTQ people.
