HS 217 - The Bright Ages - An Introduction to the Middle Ages(3.00 cr.)
"The Dark Ages" is one of the most popular terms used to describe the period in European history between the "Fall of Rome" and the Renaissance. The very name conjures up images of a backwards and intellectually stunted world. But what if that image is wrong? What if the Middle Ages were a time of artistic and intellectual creativity? What if the social and political structures of the Middle Ages were more fluid than mere rule by autocratic kings and popes? What if medieval Europeans were not isolated in their little villages but were connected by trade and travel to the Middle East, Africa, and East Asia? This course provides a survey of the European Middle Ages that looks beyond the typical view of "The Dark Ages" to how modern historians understand the complexities of a much more dynamic time. The course provides an overview of some of the major trends of medieval history as well an examination of the experiences of everyday life.
