PS 336  -  Politics and Globalization of Taiwan

(3.00 cr.)

Explores three major questions with reference to Taiwan. First, how did Taiwan make the transition from authoritarian rule to the only Chinese-language democracy in the twentieth century? How did government-led economic development alongside private sector initiatives transform a country of fewer than 25 million people into a global capitalist powerhouse (including the world's nineth largest company)? Finally, how did religion, Christian and non-Christian, spark democratization and how does it support democracy today? This course takes students to Taipei and other cities in Taiwan that includes visits to the largest semiconductor producer, Buddhist and Christian sites, indigenous villages, and a national park. Offered abroad only. A fee is charged.
