RE 245 - Intermediate Literacy Assessment and Instruction

(3.00 cr.)

Develops and utilizes foundational knowledge of literacy development for intermediate grades 3-5 using evidence-based instructional and assessment approaches. Adolescent literature and how to utilize it in instruction is explored. Students plan, modify, and implement interactive whole group and small group lesson plans for intermediate learners that takes into account the various literacy and multilingual needs of students in grades 3-5. Students learn to use various formal and informal literacy assessments to measure student progress to make informed instructional decisions and communications with stakeholders. Professional resources are analyzed by students so they can critically examine their cultural experiences and the influence they have on their instruction. Students design engaging literacy and language learning environments and experiences for their students. Mandatory service-learning hours in a classroom or tutoring environment for students in grades 3-5. 

Prerequisite: RE 220 .
Restrictions: Open to students with catalogue year 2023-2024 or beyond. Restricted to elementary education majors.
