NUR 315  -  Nursing Care of Families: Maternal Health and Childbearing

(3.00 cr.)

Focuses on providing nursing support to women and childbearing families across the reproductive spectrum, from prenatal care to childbirth, perinatal care, and infant care. The course emphasizes clinical judgment in balancing the physiological needs of mothers and newborns while addressing the psychosocial needs of the entire family. Key topics include genetics, childbirth, well-woman and well-baby screenings, maternal mental health, lactation, parental risk behaviors, and domestic safety, with a focus on culturally sensitive care. In alignment with the Jesuit commitment to social justice, the course also addresses nursing interventions aimed at reducing disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes. Students develop competencies in advocating for health equity and addressing maternal mental health. Competency is assessed through case studies, clinical reflections, simulations, patient care plans, OSCEs, group discussions, and group projects, measuring clinical judgment, communication skills, and the application of evidence-based practices. Must be passed with a C or better.

Prerequisite: At least a C or better in NUR 310 NUR 311 .
Concurrent Requisite: NUR 316 .
Restrictions: Restricted to nursing majors.
