Economics, BA

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Economics provides students with a versatile, powerful set of analytic tools for studying the social sciences. Students majoring in economics are required to take the following courses:

Requirements for the Major

Seven upper-level economics courses, four of which may be taken at the 300- or 400-level and three which must be taken at the 400-level. At the discretion of the department chair, certain courses offered by other departments may qualify toward the upper-level requirement.

Notes:

EC 102 and EC 103 satisfy a social science core requirement.
Students who plan to spend all or part of junior year abroad must take EC 301 and/or EC 302 in the sophomore year. Students will not be allowed to take EC 301 or EC 302 abroad.
Applied Calculus (MA 151 ) or Calculus I (MA 251 ). Students who have taken calculus in high school or have a strong background are encouraged to take MA 251 . This provides students the option of taking additional mathematics courses and/or completing a mathematics minor
Candidates for the BA in Economics may substitute Introduction to Statistics (ST 210 ) for Business Statistics (EC 220 ). Note that both EC 220 and ST 210 count towards the third Math/Natural Science requirement in the Loyola Core.
Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement under Curriculum and Policies).
For economics students accepted into the accelerated bachelors to MS in data science, it is recommended that they take EC 420 and ST 710. ST 710 will count as an economics elective for their undergraduate degree and will also count towards the MSDS degree. The students are also recommended to take CS 701 as an additional course.
