Philosophy, BA


Requirements for the Major


The Philosophy major consists of twelve courses in total. The requirements are as follows:

  • Eleven PL courses beyond PL 201, only one of which may be a Philosophical Perspectives Course (PL 202-299) and only one of which may be a departmental core offering in ethics (PL 300-319).

Notes:


  1. Philosophy Core Requirements: All students must take PL 201  and a second 200-level philosophical perspectives course or ethics (PL 300-319). Honors Program students may take an upper-level philosophy seminar (PL 321  and above) after completing HN 201  or HN 202  and HN 210  or WR 100 .
  2. PL 201  is a prerequisite for all other philosophy courses.
  3. PL 202-299 are "perspectives courses" that fulfill the university core 2nd-level philosophy requirement. No more than one may count toward a philosophy major or minor.
  4. PL 300-319 are ethics courses that fulfill the university core ethics requirement. No more than one may count toward philosophy major or minor.
  5. Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement  under Curriculum and Policies).
