RE 345 - Literacy Assessment and Instruction for Multilingual Learners

(3.00 cr.)

Prepares students to understand, assess, and instruct multilingual students that are developing language and literacy in more than one language. Building on theory, research, and practice from the field of multilingualism, language acquisition, and education, students learn about the process of language and literacy development of diverse children who are exposed to more than one language and cultural contexts in which this development occurs. Students design lessons on English phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics to address multilingual reading, writing, listening, and speaking to promote academic and social language development. Students also examine language and cultural diversity and address political, social, and educational questions that involve power, place, and privilege and how this shapes the schooling and communities of diverse groups.
