SP 214 - Introduction to Sign Language(3.00 cr.)
Students master the basics of communicating with American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary and fingerspelling. Coursework addresses the culture, and history of the American Deaf Culture. Considers the impact of deafness on the individual, the family, and the community in relation to their psychological, sociological, and legal perspectives. American sign language grammatical differences and signed English are introduced. Basic ASL grammar is presented. Students work on both receptive and expressive ASL vocabulary skills.
