Applied Skills Elective

Students must take one additional course that builds empirical research skills, capacity to translate sociological knowledge, concepts, and theory for non-sociological audiences, or capacity to apply sociological knowledge, concepts, and theory for social change from the following list:

Notes:

1. Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis (ST 110 ) or an equivalent statistics course (e.g., ST 210  or EC 220 ) is required for the major.  ST 110  can be used to fulfill the mathematics/natural science core requirements.
2. Interdisciplinary Major: Students wishing to combine sociology with some other field for an interdisciplinary major must take SC 100 , two 200-level sociology electives, SC 342  (or an equivalent methods course), SC 355 , three 300 or 400-level sociology electives, one of which must be must be a 400-level academic seminar, and ST 110  (or an equivalent statistics course).
3. The combination of biology/sociology is an excellent program of study for students interested in medical school, graduate study in medical sociology or public health, or a career in the health field. Combining sociology with psychology, writing, and history are also common interdisciplinary courses of study.  Global studies and forensic studies are common double majors with sociology.  
4. SC 100 , SC 201 , SC 202 , SC 203 , SC 204 , SC 205 , SC 206 , SC 207 , and SC 209  all count toward the Social Science Core requirement.
5. Only two 200-level sociology courses may count towards the major.
6. Prerequisites may be waived for any course upon receiving written permission of the instructor and the department chair.
7. Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement  under Curriculum and Policies).
8. The sociology department does not restrict students counting sociology courses towards other majors, minors or the core. However, the sociology department will honor any restrictions imposed on use of sociology courses in other programs.
