Learning Goals

Students will be able to read and translate into English advanced level (300-level) passages of Latin with proficiency in Latin vocabulary, Latin syntax, and English style and with sensitivity to Latin emphasis, word-order and tone.
Students will be able to read and translate into English intermediate level (GK 104 ) passages of Greek with proficiency in Greek vocabulary, Greek syntax, and English style and with sensitivity to Greek emphasis, word-order and tone.
Students will be able to write an analysis of a classical topic or text with an English style marked by clarity, concision, correct word selection, and grammatical proficiency.
Students will be able to write a persuasive literary or historical analysis of ancient texts that demonstrates awareness of the most important relevant evidence, awareness of the issues in the given historical period or literary genre, accurate employment of the ancient evidence, and acquaintance with the relevant disciplinary scholarship.

Requirements for the Major

Requirements for a major and an example of a typical program of courses are as follows:

Eight, three-credit courses in Latin beyond one year of secondary school Latin or its college equivalent (LT 101 ). Advanced Greek reading courses may be substituted for Latin electives. The Senior Honors Thesis (CL 450 ) is an Honors option available to qualified senior majors. The course involves an independent study and a thesis, and it may be substituted for up to two Latin electives.
Four courses in Greek (typically GK 101 , GK 102 , GK 103 , GK 104 ).

One Classical Civilization course (whether officially cross-listed or not) may be substituted for one upper-level LT course. Thus, HN 201 can fulfill a major requirement for classics majors as well as a core requirement for students in the Honors Program.

Any Greek or Latin course may be offered in Rome, as reflected in the term course offerings.
