Performing Arts, Theatre Concentration, BA


Learning Aims

Students with a theatre concentration will demonstrate a mastery in the following areas:

  • Performance literacy - defined as the demonstration of competency in each of the areas of  theatrical production: acting, directing, design, and stagecraft.
  • Historical literacy - defined as an ability to recognize, analyze, and understand major historical eras, styles, and genres within the discipline and to write about them with fluency.
  • Ensemble ability - the ability to work cooperatively towards a production with other members of the production team including actors, designers, directors, technicians, and stage managers.

Requirements for the Major


Requirements for the major and an example of a typical program of courses are as follows:

Theatre Practicum


Students must also complete two one-credit hours of DR 275   and one one-credit hour of DR 276 .  DR 276 must be taken during the senior year.

Notes:


  1. No more than one of the following courses counts toward the major: DR 260 , DR 261 , DR 263 , DR 278 .
  2. Interdisciplinary performing arts majors with a theatre concentration take six required courses (DR 100 , DR 250 , DR 251 , DR 254 , DR 350 , DR 351 ), DR 275 /two times, DR 276  and two theatre electives, only one of which may be DR 260 DR 261 DR 263 , or DR 278 .
  3. Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement  under Curriculum and Policies).
  4. DR 276  should be taken by students in their final semester before graduation.
