Requirements for the Major
The Philosophy major consists of twelve courses in total. The requirements are as follows:
- PL 201 - Foundations of Philosophy
- Eleven PL courses beyond PL 201, only one of which may be a Philosophical Perspectives Course (PL 202-299) and only one of which may be a departmental core offering in ethics (PL 300-319).

Notes:
- Philosophy Core Requirements: All students must take PL 201 and a second 200-level philosophical perspectives course or ethics (PL 300-319). Honors Program students may take an upper-level philosophy seminar (PL 321 and above) after completing HN 201 or HN 202 and HN 210 or WR 100 .
- PL 201 is a prerequisite for all other philosophy courses.
- PL 202-299 are "perspectives courses" that fulfill the university core 2nd-level philosophy requirement. No more than one may count toward a philosophy major or minor.
- PL 300-319 are ethics courses that fulfill the university core ethics requirement. No more than one may count toward philosophy major or minor.
- Students must complete the Diversity-Justice requirement by completing two Diversity-Justice designated courses anywhere in their curriculum (see Diversity-Justice Requirement under Curriculum and Policies).
