NUR 415 - Mental Health Promotion and Psychiatric Nursing(3.00 cr.)
Focuses on reducing mental health stigma, advocating for patients, and supporting the development of healthy personal habits to integrate mental health maintenance and well-being across the lifespan. Students develop clinical judgment skills to respond to grief, loss, trauma, substance abuse, and psychiatric conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. The course covers pharmacotherapeutics commonly used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders and addresses mental health needs from childhood through adulthood. The legal, ethical, cultural, spiritual, and social considerations related to mental health are integrated into the course. Competency is assessed through case studies, group discussions, group projects, written assignments, quizzes and exams, and clinical simulations evaluating students on their ability to apply mental health promotion strategies, assess and manage psychiatric conditions, and advocate for the mental well-being of patients across diverse age groups and contexts. Must be passed with a C or better.
Prerequisite: At least a C or better in NUR 310 , NUR 311 , NUR 315 , NUR 316 , NUR 320 , NUR 321 . Concurrent Requisite: NUR 416 . Restrictions: Restricted to nursing majors.
